I laughed (a lot), I cried (just a little); Get Him To The Greek was what I consider the perfect cinematic experience. Would you have guessed? I didn’t and I wouldn’t have. I actually had kinda low expectations and was happily shocked this weekend in the blessedly icy cold movie theatre.
Aldous Snow (played by Russell Brand) was hysterical – as usual – but also had a real drug addict-alcoholic story to tell that was poignant and quite frankly moving, to me at least. Think: the Hangover meets Rachel Getting Married. There was an early morning scene in Aldous’ New York rocker’s penthouse when after another sleepless night of debauchery followed by watching his ex’s raunchy but glamorous sexbot music videos all alone he this time decides to call her up. She picks up her cell while in bed in Los Angeles with a sleeping Lars Ulrich and they quietly flirt and joke but beneath the narrative you can see Aldous’ loneliness, emptiness, and need for the love of this woman. It’s all over his face and it was an intimate moment for the audience and Aldous, not the uncaring ex. In the end it doesn’t work out for him and her, as you can imagine, but I won’t give away anymore of the story. Jonah Hill and P. Diddy were great too. I give this one the worth-$13-stamp-of-approval and then some; in fact, I may even see Get Him To The Greek twice.
